The Santa Lucia Festival is of Swedish origin and celebrated on the 13th of December every year. It is the festival where light is brought into the darkness by Santa Lucia, who bears a crown of candles on her head.
She is followed by star children, all dressed in white gowns, carrying candles in their hands.
The Santa Lucia concerts all over the world have a similar structure: The singers enter the dark or dimmed room in a procession while singing the famous Santa Lucia song.
Once in choir formation, a concert takes place that includes Advent and Christmas Songs and often also features poetry.
At the conclusion of the concert, the choir once again walks out in procession while singing Santa Lucia.

Coole Kidz Choir has celebrated the Santa Lucia Tradition since 2005. In our first year we did not have the proper outfits or a candle crown. However, in 2006, DaCapo Youth Choir joined us from Jönköping in Sweden, and very kindly brought outfits for all our Coole Kidz singers.
The 40 Swedish girls, aged 14-18 year, joined up with Coole Kidz in a beautiful full-concert version of Santa Lucia Performance in the old Church in Kinvara. It was a truly successful European collaboration project, which also set a new standard for our future Santa Lucia Performances.

In 2008 our Santa Lucia Concert took place in the beautiful medieval church St Nicolas in Galway City. In 2009 Coole Kidz Choir is bringing the light to the Old Church of Ireland Church in Gort, which nowadays also functions as a public library.
